Our Paleolithic ancestors ate a diet of only meats and vegetables. Today some people are following a diet termed as the Paleo diet which consists of the same real food that our ancestors the cavemen ate, and this diet does not include processed and packaged foods, dairy products, grains or legumes. By eating only meats and vegetables (as well as some nuts) we feed our bodies nutrient dense foods with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. By avoiding all packaged, refined and processed foods, we avoid the intake of empty calories and no longer eat foods that do not contain the necessary nutrients we need for proper health.
The meats in a Paleo diet come from pasture raised, free range and grass fed animals. The fat content in this type of meat is different than the fat content in the meats from animals that have been fed corn and grains and raised in large confinement animal feeding lots by the food industry. Wild and naturally raised meats are much leaner than the meats raised by the food industry, and this meat has low amounts of saturated fats. High amounts of saturated fats such as what is found in grain fed meats may be the cause of many health issues today such as cardiovascular disease.
Autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, have been found to be caused by an unhealthy gut and digestive system. Autoimmunity is when your immune system attacks your body. The immune system normally should be attacking viruses, parasites and bacteria. However, many people’s immune systems are compromised by an unhealthy digestive system. An unhealthy gut may be due to an unhealthy balance of gut flora and the consumption of grains and gluten. That is why some people who have a problem with digesting gluten will choose Paleo Diet Recipes.
